Marine grade stainless steel refers to stainless steel used in marine areas; it has particularly high requirements for the corrosion resistance of steel. According to the current industry standards, there are two kinds of general marine stainless steel; grade 304 (UNS S30400/s30403) and grade 316 (UNS 31600/s31603). They are all austenitic stainless steels with superior ductility, high strength, non-magnetic, good welding performance and very good corrosion resistance.
The corrosion resistance of this type of stainless steel mainly relies on the highly corrosion-resistant chromium oxide film formed on their surface. In 304 and 316 stainless steel, about 18% of chromium is added to the iron to form a chromium oxide film. In 316 stainless steel, 2% molybdenum is also added; to further improve the corrosion resistance. It can meet 90% of marine applications
